Michael Bailes & The Fragrant Garden

Michael Bailes has been growing herbs and useful plants for a living for 20 years. With his wife. Jan, he is the founder and co-owner of The Fragrant Garden, situated on five acres in Erina Valley on Australia's Central Coast of New South Wales.

The garden is a beautiful combination of cottage garden, fragrant plants and herbs. The Fragrant Garden has the largest collection of fragrant plants in the southern hemisphere.

Michael has an incredibly wide ranging knowledge of herbs, their horticulture and frowing conditions, their culinary uses, perfumery uses, folklore, ethnobotany, poetry, literature and medicinal uses. His special interests are medicine, perfumery and aromatherapy. (The Fragrant Garden has recently launched two new perfumes).

Michael is a frequent guest on commercial and ABC talk back radio, including Owen Delaney overnight, ABC country programmes and guest host for several gardening talkbacks. Television programmes include most Sydney and Newcastle breakfast shows, Clive Robertson, Burke's Backyard and several childrens shows.

Last year Jan and Michael edited the Australian version of the beatiful book "The Scented Garden", one of the most comprehensive books ever written on fragrant plants. Michael has written articles for gardening and farming magazines and with his wife Jan, a retired high school English teacher, has written dozens of pamphletswhich are gven out free at The Fragrant Garden. They also compile The Fragrant Garden mail order product catalogue and plant catalogue.
