VIOLETS
IN LITERATURE
There
are may quotations about violets in Literature , here are
some of my favourites
Violet is for
faithfulnesse
Which in me shall abide;
Hoping likewise that from your heart
You will not let it slide
(from a popular songbook, A Handfull of Pleasant
Delites, first published in 1566)
Lay her in the
earth,
And from her fair and unpolluted flesh
May violets spring
(Hamlet, v., 1)
. . . violets
dim,
But sweeter than the lids of Junos eyes
Or Cyathereas breath
(The Winters Tale, iv., 3)
When daisies
pied, and violets blue,
And cuckoo-buds of yellow hue,
And Lady-smocks all silver-white,
Do paint the meadows with delight
(Loves Labours Lost)
The
sweetness of the violet's deep blue eyes, Kissed by the breath of
heaven, seems color'd by its skies
-Byron
We welcome any
contributions, does anybody know the derivation of this
one?
